What is the benefit of two clutches?A double saving: time and energy.

The 7-speed S tronic® dual-clutch gearbox not only combines two gearboxes in one, but also sportiness and efficiency. The high level of efficiency and the rapid gear changes deliver even greater driving pleasure.

As long ago as 1985, Walter Röhrl tested this technology in the Sport quattro S1 – and was suitably impressed. An enthusiasm that Audi drivers share to this day, because the modern S tronicS tronicFaster gearshifts, sportier driving: the S tronic combines the sporty characteristics of a manual gearbox with the advantages of an automatic.S tronic ® changes gear at lightning speed. To do this, two multi-disc clutches serve the different gears. One large clutch transfers the torque via a drive shaft to the gearwheels of the oddnumbered gears. A second clutch serves the evennumbered gears via a hollow shaft. Both parts of the transmission are permanently active, although there is only ever one actively connected to the engine via a closed clutch. For example, if the vehicle is accelerating in third gear, then the second part of the transmission is already engaged in fourth gear. The gear change happens very quickly through the change of clutches – the first clutch opens, whilst the other one shuts immediately. The gear change only lasts a few hundredths of a second and is completed with virtually no interruption in the power flow. It runs so smoothly and comfortably that the driver barely notices it. It doesn’t matter whether the driver chooses the fully automatic modes with the programme D (Drive) or S (Sport) or changes gear manually with the gearshift paddles – the gear change feels precise and extremely smooth. Even with all of this dynamic technology, the S tronic still remains very efficient. Because due to its high efficiency, there is a reduction in both fuel consumption and emissions.

Your benefits at a glance

  • Gearshift times amounting to a few hundredths of a second
  • Gearshifts with no interruption to the flow of power 13
  • Automatic transmission in two selectable modes: Drive (D) and Sport (S)
  • In manual mode gearshifts are carried out just like in a racing car, by means of paddles on the steering wheel or by nudging the selector lever
  • Excellent efficiency results in better fuel economy,
  • meaning lower fuel consumption and emissions
  • Available in combination with quattro®quattro®Vorsprung durch Technik: quattro® technology stands for permanent power to all four wheels distributed between the front and rear axles.quattro® Vorsprung durch Technik: quattro technology stands for permanent power to all four wheels distributed between the front and rear axles. quattro permanent four-wheel drive

Fuel consumption and emissions data:
