Electronic assistants

Jun 6, 2005
According to a current statistic, 75 % of all road accidents involving a car are the result of human error. In future, electronic driver assistance systems should compensate at least in part for human shortcomings.
Audi Electronic Ventures has now introduced a new system. A prototype has so-called photonic mixer devices in the windscreen. These are sensors which create a three-dimensional image of the traffic situation in front of the vehicle by means of infrared and light-sensitive semiconductor elements. The system can record an image up to 200 times per second and present it as a schematic diagram on a display. Compared with camera-supported assistance programs, the system also functions without any difficulty in snow and rain. Furthermore, this Audi technology is also more economical to produce. According to the developers, however, it will still be a few years until it is ready for series production.
