Established by the American entrepreneur Don Panoz and organised by the umbrella organisation IMSA, in close cooperation with the 24 Hours of Le Mans organiser the ACO (Automobile Club de l'Ouest), the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) has developed, over a short period of time, into one of the most popular race series in North America.
Audi has been involved in the ALMS since 2000 and has been the dominating marque in the series since then. In the Manufacturers', Drivers', and Teams' championship of the prototype class Audi remains, up till now, unbeaten just as it does in the 12-hour race at Sebring and “Petit Le Mans” in Road Atlanta, the two most important races of this year's ten event ALMS schedule.
In the previous ALMS season the American Team ADT Champion Racing prevailed for the first time. Dave Maraj's team, which also competes for Audi Sport North America in the 2005 season, won seven of the nine races. Instead of running just one Audi R8 as before, the team enters two cars in all the races.
