At Brno, defending champion Mattias Ekström gave the new Audi A4 DTM its first victory and took the overall lead of Europe´s most popular Touring Car Series. With his second-place finish, Tom Kristensen made a perfect 1-2 victory. The two Audi drivers had a thrilling fight with the former runner-up of the Formula 1 World Championship, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, before taking the lead and increasing the gap to almost 25 seconds.
In front of 38,000 spectators, Audi also showed a strong team performance: Five of the eight Audi A4 DTM cars scored points with top-eight positions. Allan McNish scored his first ever DTM points, finishing seventh despite a ‘drive-trough’ penalty. Christian Abt was the best driver of a year-old car in sixth position, Frank Stippler finished eighth. Almost 2.5 million spectators watched the race “live” on German TV.
