Key technology

All actions to activate and deactivate the vehicle's security systems and starting and stopping can be operated without a key on the Audi A8. The key merely needs to be about the driver's person. An authorised key is identified automatically by a radio signal dialog. By recognising up to four drivers, advanced key forms the basis of the one-touch memory personalisation system.

Operating principle

Vehicle access and locking
With advanced key the central locking can be locked and unlocked at any vehicle door and in the same way from the tailgate. For this purpose a proximity sensor and a locking button are integrated into each door handle. To unlock the door, the authorised key must be no more than 1.50 metres from the door and the door handle pressed. The MMI can be used to pre-programme whether this action unlocks the complete security system or only the door concerned.

When leaving the vehicle it is sufficient simply to tap a locking button on the door handle. If an authorised key is detected at the same time within range of the door, the central locking activates and locks the entire vehicle.

Start authorisation
The start authorisation system is also verified by means of the key recognition process. If the verification is passed, the steering and ignition are released. Consequently, for the vehicle to be started an authorised key must be located inside it. To start the vehicle, the driver simply has to press the start button on the centre console above the MMI terminal.

Accustomed functions still possible
Accustomed radio remote control, central locking and vehicle starting functions can still be operated by way of the ignition lock when the advanced key feature is fitted. Even with the advanced key feature, the vehicle key still retains all the functions of the standard mechanical key (radio remote control with folding key bit, including immobiliser and access authorisation control). The underside of the driver's door handle still features a conventional door lock.
The Start/Stop button can be used to switch the ignition and engine on and off. To start/stop the engine in the conventional way, an electronic ignition lock is still fitted in conjunction with the advanced key feature.
