What functions are supported by the Bluetooth interface?

In combination with the Bluetooth mobile phones recommended and approved by Audi, the following functions can also be used from the vehicle via the Bluetooth connection.

Hands-free (in full-duplex mode) via the microphone installed in the vehicle and the car radio's speakers.

Answering/rejecting incoming calls and "hanging up" calls via the optional leather-covered multifunction steering wheel or the optional navigation system.

Automatic audio muting during phone calls.

Dialling numbers from the SIM card's phonebook via the optional leather-covered multifunction steering wheel.

Dialling numbers by direct voice dialogue input (not available for Audi A4 Cabriolet or Audi TT Roadster).

Voice dialling (stored speaker-dependent names; not available for Audi A4 Cabriolet or Audi TT Roadster).

Displaying signal strength and the name of the network provider (not available for all phones) in the optional "navigation system plus".

As soon as the phone is paired with the vehicle, the phone book stored on the SIM card (maximum 255 entries, depending on capacity of the SIM card) is transferred to the vehicle's system.

Why can I not currently access numbers stored in the phone?

The phones currently available on the market do not support a uniform industry-wide interface standard enabling access to the information stored in the phone.

Manufacturer-specific protocols such as those used to synchronise phones with Microsoft Outlook on a PC are not disclosed. New standards, such as SyncML, will in future support accessing of numbers stored on the phone.

Can I retrofit Audi models built before February 2004 with Bluetooth?

The new generation of mobile phone preparation (Audi A2 from July 2003, Audi A3 from June 2003, Audi TT from July 2003 and Audi A4 from September 2003 on the centre console, Audi A6 since April 2004, Audi A8 since September 2004) can only be retrofitted by changing the control unit for one with the Bluetooth function, at extra charge.

In view of the prevailing technical circumstances, mobile phone preparations in older vehicles cannot be retrofitted.

From when has Bluetooth technology been available in my preferred model?

The advantages of Bluetooth technology can be utilised in conjunction with the "mobile phone preparation" feature in Audi vehicles manufactured after the following dates.

Audi A2: since production month February 2004

Audi A3: since production month February 2004

Audi A4, A4 Avant, A4 Cabriolet with "telephone on centre console" option: since production month February 2004

Audi A4, A4 Avant, A4 Cabriolet with "telephone on centre armrest" option: since production month June 2004

Audi TT Coupé, TT Roadster: since production month February 2004

Audi A6: since market launch at end of April 2004 (saloon) or end of February 2005 (Avant)

Audi A8: since production month September 2004

Who is my contact if I experience problems with Bluetooth phones?

If you have any queries or problems relating to your mobile phone, please contact the mobile phone dealer or network provider from whom you purchased the device. The terms and conditions of the respective phone manufacturer apply exclusively.

Why must the mobile phone always be in the adapter set?

GSM telephones work with a transmission power of up to two watts. For this reason, relatively high field strengths can occur, especially in the interior of the vehicle.

In order to protect the occupants and the electronic equipment of your vehicle, the mobile must always be placed in the appropriate adapter set. This ensures that the telephone is always connected to the vehicle's outside aerial. The transmission power is radiated optimally outside the vehicle, and your mobile will also be charged.

What happens if there is more than one Bluetooth phone in the vehicle?

The universal hands-free unit can be paired with a maximum of four phones. Whichever mobile phone was paired last takes priority.

If it is out of range, the last-but-one phone paired is searched for, and so on. You can avoid ambiguity by disabling the Bluetooth function on your mobile or by clearing the pairing for mobile phones you do not need.

Where can I find out more about using a Bluetooth phone?

For instructions on using your mobile phone, especially with regard to pairing it with the universal hands-free unit, refer to your mobile’s operating instructions. A Bluetooth telephone must be paired with the system in a one-off process before it can be operated via the hands-free unit.

Detailed pairing instructions for selected mobile phones are available as a PDF download on the page "Mobile phone preparation". Click the link at the top of this table to go to the "Mobile phone preparation" page. Your Audi owner’s manual provides instructions on how to use the hands-free unit.

For which mobile phones are adapter sets available?

The range of phones for which a mobile phone adapter set is available is being continually extended. The emphasis is on commercially available business phones from leading manufacturers.

You can consult an up-to-date list here in the form of a PDF file.

Can I use any Bluetooth telephone with the hands-free unit?

In principle, any telephone with the Bluetooth 1.1 standard and "hands-free profile" (HFP) can be paired with the hands-free unit.

Bluetooth telephones differ from one another in terms of hardware (Bluetooth chipset) and software. It is therefore possible that the functionality may not be completely identical when pairing with the hands-free facility.

For this reason, Audi checks new mobile phones appearing on the market for compatibility with the hands-free unit. On this basis it recommends certain phones for optimum functionality and sound quality. You will find an updated list of recommended phone models on the "Mobile phone preparation" page in the form of a PDF download. Click the link at the top of this table to go to the "Mobile phone preparation" page.

Where can I obtain more information about Bluetooth telephones?

For more details on the Bluetooth standard and Bluetooth compatibility of mobile phones, visit http://www.bluetooth.com or consult your mobile phone manufacturer's website.

Why do new mobile phone adapter sets only become available later?

Both the hardware (specific plastic holder) and the appropriate software for a new mobile phone adapter set must be redeveloped and thoroughly tested. This development can only be carried out based on the respective mobile phones once in series production, i.e. after the units have appeared.

By co-operating with mobile phone manufacturers, we always try to reduce the development time for the mobile adapter to as short a period as possible. However, work is often still being carried out on the software until shortly before the mobile phone is launched.

Aerial pick-off on adapter set for mobile phones without external aerial plug

For mobile phones without an external aerial plug, the radiation is picked off without contact by an aerial coupler in the mobile phone adapter ("induction"). If the adapter set is used, this means that the vehicle's external aerial is also used for mobile phones without an aerial plug.

Can I only use the mobile phone preparation with a Bluetooth mobile?

The universal hands-free device can also be used with mobile phones without Bluetooth functionality. Contact between the hands-free device and the mobile phone is also established via the appropriate mobile phone adapter. You can consult an up-to-date list of the phones supported here in the form of a PDF file.
