Innovation clusterSince 1994 Audi has been collating the know-how of over 100 employees at its Aluminium and Lightweight Construction Centre at the Neckarsulm site. At the Centre, engineers develop innovative products, such as the Audi Space Frame (ASF), as well as new manufacturing techniques and production methods. Their successes in research and development are a major force behind Audi's innovative prowess. Aluminium construction perfectedThe Audi Space Frame (ASF), a high-strength, rigid and very light aluminium frame structure, is one of the highlights of the Aluminium and Lightweight Construction Centre's development achievements.
The ASF forms the basic structure of the all-aluminium A8 and A2 bodies, which are very light compared with steel bodies. The driver and passengers in these models therefore benefit from a particularly high level of active safety and dynamic handling, coupled with economical fuel consumption.
In addition, the Centre staff develop manufacturing techniques and production methods which make the volume production of these complex lightweight products possible in the first place. | Audi Space FrameYou will find out more about the Audi Space Frame (ASF) in the Glossary. |
